Newsletter June 2017

A few things to share with you as we near the end of term…….

National Award

It is with absolute pride that I announce that Riverside Primary School was the recipient of the Community Partnership Award for the First Minister’s Reading Challenge.  We received a beautiful glass trophy which can be viewed in the school reception and a golden envelope containing £1000 of book tokens for our school library!  We are very proud of all of the work the children, staff, parents and wider community members have done towards promoting a reading culture at Riverside. A particular thanks to Chrissie Gemmell, DHT who has driven this project forward. (She chose not to attend the ceremony herself as she wanted to teach her class during the Inspection week!)

Inspection

We are absolutely delighted with the wonderful feedback we have received from HMIe and would like to thank all of our amazing children, parents, staff and community partners who have loudly and proudly voiced their appreciation of the work of Riverside Primary.  Further and more detailed information will be provided in August when we have the printed report.

Staffing

Mrs Boyle returned to school this week following her maternity leave.  Mrs McLeod will return in August.  We will also be joined by Miss Erin Laurie and Miss Elizabeth Livingston as our probationer teachers next session.  Miss Stewart leaves at the end of June to take up a teaching post in another authority, and we also say farewell to Miss Ashurst and Miss Richardson who have been our probationer teachers this year.  We wish them well for the future.

Classes

All children have now had an opportunity to meet with their new teachers for next year and details of next session’s classes are detailed below, current Primary One children have been issued with a separate letter.  However, again, I would remind you that staffing changes and restructuring of classes could happen at any time in the school year, including the summer holidays.  This is always dependent on the number of children entering the school and the staffing levels.

Music Tuition in Stirling Council

Applications for Music tuition within the Stirling Council Scheme are now available on the Stirling Council Website at http://my.stirling.gov.uk/services/education-and-learning/extra-curricular-activities/musictuition

This year, we have introduced online applications which we hope will make the process easier and we have extended the application period.  Applications should be submitted by 14 August.  Tuition is available in Strings, Piano, Woodwind, Brass, Guitar, Bagpipes and Chanter, Percussion (from S1) and Voice (from S1)

Applicants will be assessed during the first two weeks of term in August and places allocated thereafter.  Please note, pupils currently receiving music tuition do not need to re-apply.

Any queries should be directed to musictuition@stirling.gov.uk

Help with costs of the School Day

There is a wide range of financial help if you are on a low income and your child is at school.  This includes Footwear and Clothing Grants, Free Schools Meals and Education Maintenance Allowance.  To find out more information and how to apply, please go online to the Council Website www.stirling.gov.uk and search for school grants.

Sports Day

We were very fortunate that, this year, the sun shone for our Sports Day.  All children and staff thoroughly enjoyed the day.  A trophy will be given to the winning house which will be announced at our final assembly….

Track and Field Event

On 31 May a group of Primary Six/Seven children took part in the Stirling Schools Track and Field Event at Stirling University.  The children competed in a range of events including running, javelin and long jump.  Congratulations to the whole team for a superb performance.

Cricket

Following Cricket Taster Sessions with Tony Phillips (Cricket Development Officer) some of our Primary Five and Six children participated in a Cricket Festival at Stirling County Cricket Club on Wednesday 7 June.

Fun Run

We had a hugely successful Fun Run and Fun Night organised by our amazing Parent Council. The total amount raised is still being finalised.  If you still have sponsor money to hand in please take it to the school office.  Many thanks to parents, staff and children for making it a fantastic evening.  If you donated homebaking and have a tin to collect, please come in to the school office.  Thank you.

Twitter

We are continuing to use Twitter as another way of sharing our news. We do use photographs of children whom we know are allowed to be photographed. We do not encourage parents to take photos at school events as it is not possible for parents to know which other children in the group have permission to have their photo taken. We hope you can understand the sensitivity around this issue. At school concerts we now take photos of individual children dressed up which can be ordered and purchased at a small cost.

Book Fair

Thank you to everyone who supported our recent Book Fair. Total takings at the fair were £1491.60 and our commission was a fantastic £834.96! With this we will be able to buy a substantial amount of books for the nursery and school libraries. Thank you again, for helping to make this such a success.

Logie Award Ceremony

Each year the ’Friends of Logie Kirk’ invite us to participate in a presentation based on part of the curriculum. This year, our reading ambassadors went along to present on our work regarding the promotion of reading and the First Minister’s Reading Challenge.  It was very successful and they were able to report on the national award that had been won that day.  We also received £300 from Logie Trustees to buy non-fiction books for the library.

Stirling Mod

Well done to all the children who competed in various competitions at the Stirling Mòd on Saturday 20 May.  A number of medals made it home to our successful children.  We are very proud of all children who took part.

Cuach na Cloinne – Gaelic Football Festival

Children from P4 – 7G competed in a football festival in Glasgow.  A large number of teams from Gaelic classes across the Central belt took part and one of our teams made it through to the semi-finals on the day.  All children had a great time and were commended for speaking Gaelic at all times.

Annual Update Forms

Forms were issued recently to check that the information we hold for your child is correct.  We would be grateful if you would sign and return the form if you have not already done so.  We ask that parents keep us up to date throughout the year of any changes to telephone numbers, addresses etc.

Summer Weather

Hopefully the warm and sunny days we have been enjoying recently will return!  This means the children will be outdoors much more.  With this in mind, I would like to remind you of the need for sunscreen and sun hats for the children.  Can I ask you to please apply the “once a day application sunscreen” to children before they come to school and provide a sun hat if appropriate.  Let’s hope that sending you this reminder doesn’t keep the sun away!

Church Service

Our end of year church service will be in Viewfield Church at 10am on Thursday 29 June.  All parents/carers are welcome.  As we will be walking to and from church, and as usual with our unpredictable weather, please make sure that children bring a waterproof jacket – just in case!  All children will return to school after the church service.  This year our collection will go to the NSPCC.

End of term arrangements:

  • School will close for the summer break at 1.30pm on Friday 30 June for children requiring bus transport and/or school lunch. All other children may leave at 12.30 at the start of the lunch break.

  • Catering Services will only be providing packed lunches on Friday 30June. There will be a choice of sandwich fillings including a vegetarian option and lunches should be ordered and paid for in the usual way.

I wish to inform you of arrangements for Friday 30 June.  As per last year’s arrangements, we wish to give our P7 Leavers a fitting end to their primary school career.  At 12.20pm they will be clapped out of Riverside P.S. by the whole school.  There will be a designated area at the Forrest Road end of the playground for any P7 parents/carers who wish to attend.  We would ask any non P7 parents to stand behind the rows of watching children.

P4 - 6 pupils will then be dismissed from the playground by their teachers at the 12.30pm bell.  P1 – 3 pupils will return to their buildings and will leave via their usual exits.  (School lunch children will be escorted to the lunch hall).

In the event of very inclement weather, this event will not take place and all children will leave from their usual exits.

Term officially ends on Friday 30 June at 1.30pm.  We expect all children to attend on the last day of term.

We do find on the last day of each term that the office staff spend a lot of time making phone calls to follow up absence.  If your child is unable to attend through sickness please ensure that you contact the school to let us know.  This helps us to mark off all children correctly on the system before the end of the school year and prevents us following up in August.

Bus Arrangements for Last Day of Term

The Public Transport Unit have advised us of the bus arrangements for 30 June. As the ‘school bus’ is a registered local service bus, the journey time cannot be altered to suit the early closure. However, the C30 service bus will leave school in Forrest Road at 13:38 and go via Abbey Road, Argyll Avenue and Forth Street to Stirling Bus Station (the bus will sit at Stance 4 in the bus station for 7 minutes), then via Murray Place, Cowane Street, Union Street, Causewayhead Road, Chattan Avenue, Lothian Crescent and finally Easter Cornton Road arriving at app. 14.17. Note that this journey will serve Causewayhead Road instead of Dunster Road.

The service terminates at Easter Cornton Road. Therefore, Alloa Road and Manor Powis are not served by this bus. Pupils returning to Alloa Road and/or Manor Powis should change at Stirling Bus Station to one of the following ‘First Bluebird’ bus services:

Stance 9

Service 63 at 14:08 or Service 63A at 14:23.

The Bus Station Supervisor, who has PVG clearance, will meet the incoming C30 (due at 13:53) at Stance 4 and conduct any pupils who may wish to travel to Alloa Road or Manor Powis to their appropriate bus.

Please ensure that your child is clear about his/her going home arrangements for Friday 30 June.

Graduation

The theme of this year’s P7 concert was ‘An Inspectors Calls‘ which we performed in early June followed by our graduation ceremony on 16June. The children were absolutely outstanding and were a credit to Riverside Primary School.  Our thanks go to the P.7 staff team for all their hard work and commitment and thanks to Mr Gary Cordiner for being such an entertaining guest speaker. We wish our P7 children all the best and every success at High School!  We will miss you!

Medication held in School

Just to remind you that all medication held in school must be collectedby an adult by 12.30 p.m. on Friday 30 June. Any medication not collected by that time will be disposed of in the appropriate manner.

Lost Property

We still have a large amount of lost property.  Named items have been returned to children, however, there is still a large number of unnamed items.  You are welcome to come in and have a look by Wednesday 28 June.

Outstanding Lunch Money

Can all outstanding lunch money please be paid to the school office by Monday 26 June 2017.  Thank you.
